PERSONAL MOTIVATIONAL PROFILE (PMP) & CAREER DEVELOPMENT

What has doing the PMP to do with Career Development?

The PMP will quickly and effectively tell you what your top 3 Motivators at work are. Why is this important?

To be successful in your career now and in the future you need to understand that your motivators are essential, and if you choose a career which is antithetical to your motivators, the long term effect will be unhappiness, and worse: probable illness and debilitating health problems.

To illustrate what we mean: ask yourself, Do you know anybody who says they work ‘for the money’ AND they hate their work, complain all the time, and, if you were being honest, already look as if they have health problems developing? We certainly know many people like this. They have traded their health and happiness for money – ironically, they wanted the money so that at some future point they thought they would be healthy and happy (when they had had enough), but unfortunately these kind of emotional contracts with ourselves usually have a terrible ‘sting’ or unforeseen consequence.

When we look at careers – jobs in certain sectors and areas – we find that they typically involve a set of motivators that will be satisfied by the very nature of the work – and some that will be excluded. So, in considering a career, it is good to reflect – these are my top 3 motivators, does this post enable these three motivators to be satisfied?

Perhaps some examples of what we mean might be in order here. A friend of ours is motivated first by what we call, The Spirit – the need to be free and autonomous. Why then did they choose a post in a professional company that required them to fill out time usage every 15 minutes?! The very structure of how this company functioned for all its employees worked against our friend’s motivational needs. Needless to say, she left within a year.

Or let’s be more general still: you want to be a manager? OK, but is the motivator we call The Director in your profile? The Director motivator is about wanting to control people and resources – in fact, actively liking managing people! You may have the skill set to manage, but unless The Director is in your profile then you are likely to find it extremely wearing over time (although this can be mitigated, obviously, if your other two motivators are being met).

Studying your PMP, therefore, can be an excellent way of establishing whether future posts are really for you. And, of course, if The Builder motivator – money – is really your number 1 motivator, then go for that highly constricting job with the million dollar bonus!
