PERSONAL MOTIVATIONAL PROFILE (PMP) & REDUNDANCY

What has doing the PMP to do with Redundancy?

The PMP will quickly and effectively tell you what your top 3 Motivators at work are. Why is this important?

Redundancy is usually not the most pleasant experience, certainly in the short term. Yet time and again we find people for whom this has nearly been the best event ever for them. It has forced them to re-think their priorities and opened up a whole new world of opportunity. The PMP can be a major resource in just such a situation.

For people who have reached ‘the middle of the way’ – late Thirties, Forties and even Fifties – this is a time for reassessment. So a key question is what kind of career do I want from here on?

There are four major types of answer: stay in corporate life, work in the SME, set up a business (SME), and/or become a consultant.

All of these four options are correct – if your motivators match their typical kind of profile. What do I mean by this? Over 5000 Motivational Maps (a fuller version of the PMP – see www.motivationalmaps.com) and PMPs have been done and there is a strong correlation between certain motivators and certain options.

Typically, then, those who think they wish to stay in the Corporate environment need to check that their motivators are predominantly what we call “R” or Relationship motivators. These motivators are fundamentally about security. The big organisation can (though less so these days) provide security in spades.

Those who wish to work in SMEs or set up their own SME tend to have what we call “W” or Work motivators. The big issue here is Achievement – making things happen, target orientation, and success. Working ‘corporate’ for these people tends to be very frustrating as there are far too many procedures and gatekeepers in corporate systems.

Finally, and this category is where we find so many ex-corporate ‘beasts’ appearing, becoming a ‘consultant’ (in all its forms and guises). These people tend to be defined by what we call “S” or Self motivators. Their primary need is for Growth and self-actualisation. They want meaning, freedom and creativity – and perhaps most of all: to make a difference.

So, if you have been made redundant or are about to be, what is your motivational profile? Does what you are thinking of doing match it? Do the PMP now and find out – it’s a small investment with a big return.
